Acupuncture for Fertility and IVF
Fertility and Chinese Medicine
Our North Sydney acupuncture clinic sees a lot of fertility patients. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine has been used to treat and enhance fertility for four-thousand years. Acupuncture brings your body back to balance. This can take a little time to achieve, but with consistent care, we will work to get you in optimum condition to conceive naturally.
Fertility patients seen in our North Sydney acupuncture clinic, come in for a variety of issues that are effecting their chances of falling pregnant. Issues that can affect fertility can include:
- Poly cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
- Low ovarian reserve (low AMH levels)
- Low sperm count
- Low sperm motility
- Low sperm morphology
- Fallopian tube blocked or scarred
- Unexplained infertility
A common question I get from patients seeking Acupuncture for fertility is should I be having IVF? According to the professor of obstetrics and gynaecology of Adelaide University, he said that it was possible for couples to conceive naturally if they are patient. He also said that there are 41000 cycles of IVF each year in Australia resulting in about 10000 births or one in 33 babies. About one-quarter of these were unnecessary treatments as there was no known factor causing the difficulty in conception.
This is exciting news to those having difficulty conceiving and wanting to fall pregnant naturally. I can help you by using a combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbs, with some advice on lifestyle changes. Acupuncture can enhance your fertility by boosting your ovarian reserves, enhancing the follicular phase of your cycle, aiding ovulation, and helping develop a strong luteal phase.
The issue of PCOS can be difficult in patients trying to conceive naturally with. At our North Sydney and Wollahra practice we use a combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to regulate your hormones, bring your cycle back to a normal length. Our aim is to help you conceive naturally.
There is exciting recent research on Acupuncture for PCOS. The stimulation of Acupuncture points CV6 and CV4 has been shown to convert high androgen levels into oestrogen; thus reducing thickening of ovaries, and bringing cycle back into normal functioning and increasing your chance to conceive naturally. Endometriosis is a very uncomfortable condition that is seen frequently amongst our fertility patients in North Sydney. Endometriosis is where the uterine lining continues to grow outside of the uterus. The symptoms experienced by the patients has a lot of variation: some have severe pain that precludes them from activity, some have heavy periods with large clots and pain, then there are others that are asymptomatic. Due to the differing symptoms of endometriosis we work with each individual patient.
Does Acupuncture really improve your chances with IVF?
Science thinks so!
Acupuncture used in conjunction with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to treat infertility has been successfully employed in China for millennia; you just have to look at China’s population of 1.3 billion people to see that I may have a point. We still practice in this way in our North Sydney acupuncture clinic, but we have the luxury of drawing on scientific evidence and sophisticated testing to help with our approach, and our knowledge.
This was from a time before Western Medicine was available or even thought of. Now, we do have modern science and the technology that is employed is amazing. This begs the question that many of my fertility patients in my North Sydney acupuncture clinic ask: “does acupuncture really have a role in IVF?”. It does, and I’ll show you why!
In more recent times, modern science has developed excellent techniques in follicle stimulation, egg collection, fertilisation and embryo culture, which has seen IVF success rate grow rapidly. The areas they fall short in are helping the uterine lining to thicken and the embryo to implant. The good news is that acupuncture can enhance the IVF procedure in these two areas!
The science supporting the use of acupuncture to increase the effectiveness of IVF is very thorough:
Ng et al concluded in their study on The role of acupuncture in subfertility that:
“The pregnancy rate of IVF treatment is significantly increased, especially when acupuncture is administered on the day of embryo transfer.”
This is backed up by Dieterle M.D. et al in the study Effect of acupuncture on the outcome of in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection: a randomized, prospective, controlled clinical study
“In group I (acupuncture group), the clinical pregnancy rate and ongoing pregnancy rate (33.6% and 28.4%, respectively) were significantly higher than in group II (Non-acupuncture) (15.6% and 13.8%).”
The success that acupuncture has demonstrated in studies and research on acupunctures role in IVF is definitely great news and my patients who come to me come for this reason; but what they get in addition to this a great feeling of relaxation, and from this a sense of confidence. My patients who go into an IVF procedure feeling confident and relaxed and feel that their experience is definitely enhanced.
